Dear Ex-President Mr. Trump,
I am a terrorist. I have greying hair, too much body fat, and annoying arthritis throughout my aging physicality. I do not believe in guns. I believe in words.
I am a terrorist. Ask my ex-husband.
I grew up in the forties, taking in the newsreels from overseas of the terror and violence inflicted on people of the Jewish faith. Forgive me, my German friends and relatives but even today, I have a hard time listening to a German accent. I am a terrorist.
I never liked Fascists. I am an Anti-fascist.
Therefore, apparently, according to Ex-President Mr. Donald Trump, I am a terrorist.
I worked in the music business for 60 years. I stood side by side in the studios, on the risers, at lunch, at social gathering, on planes and buses, in concert halls, at union board meetings, at committee meetings, and at social gathering with my beloved friends and colleagues, black, brown, yellow, white… I am a terrorist.
Tears have fallen from my eyes as I try to imagine how it must feel to lose a loved one to police violence…or any kind of violence. I am a terrorist.
I traveled in concert in the USA with Nat King Cole in 1962, and watched when my black colleagues were served drinks that had ice cubes with flies in them, to let them know they were not welcome. We left those restaurants together, my friends and I.
I took photographs and wrote interviews with residents at Union Rescue Mission here in Los Angeles, twenty years ago. I learned the stories behind how the women and children ended up there. I heard how differently, how insensitively they were treated if they were black, when tragedy struck, like when the police came to inform one young woman that her infant son had drowned while under the non-care at her ex-husband-the-drug-dealer’s-house. He had threatened her with violence if she kept her son away from him so…
Not enough has changed. I am a terrorist.
I am an anti-fascist. I support examination of police records, injuries and deaths reported during arrests. I also support sending a note of thanks to the police who “took a knee”, shared a hug, treated with kindness the demonstrators for Black Lives Matter.
I am a terrorist.
I hate guns. I do not want to live in a country where people – where ANYONE – is encouraged to carry a gun.
I am a terrorist. I just don’t do enough about it on a daily basis.
For more information, check with my ex-husband.
Sincerely, Sally Jeanne Stevens
