Day 29 of Poetry Month

UNFINISHED LYRICS

Score sheets in a box,

on the floor next to the piano,

partly finished lyrics...

some of them really good, I thought

back in the seventies.

Too hard to finish them now.

I'm a different person.

I don't know what those words

"Jenny hides her dreams from sight

and swears she hasn't any..."

mean.

 Those words,

inspired by a black & white etching

artfully framed,

purchased at a festival someplace,

so many years ago that the white linen matting

has dulled to beige.

An etching of a sad young girl.

No one I knew.

But something felt familiar.

So the poet went inside Jenny's mind and

pulled out her thoughts.

And they fit perfectly.

Sometimes you can't hear your own thoughts

till you see them

through the mirror

of someone else's pain.
